Tesco to close meat, fish and hot deli counters in the UK.

February 28, 2023

Tesco will close all remaining fresh meat, fish, and hot deli counters on 26 February 2023. The space will be repurposed to reflect the needs of its customers.

We first announced changes to our counters in 2019, and we’ve been continuously reviewing them since then. We’ve seen a significant drop in demand for our counters in recent years, and our customers no longer say they’re a big reason they come in and shop with us. Instead, they are opting to purchase from our aisles’ wide selection of high-quality products, according to the supermarket chain.

In January, the retail giant explained that most of its stores no longer have counters and those that do only have them open on limited days and hours.

These are difficult decisions to make, Tesco CEO Jason Tarry said, but they are necessary to ensure we remain focused on delivering value for our customers wherever we can, as well as ensuring our store offer reflects what our customers value the most. Tesco will continue to collaborate with third parties interested in taking over the redundant counter space, said Jason Tarry, CEO of Tesco.
