Atomic Changes Pty Ltd, trading as Bomberry, has recalled several 150g chocolate-covered berry products across Australia due to the presence of foreign matter, specifically metal. The affected products have been sold nationally through Woolworths, independent food retailers including IGA, Harris Farm and Drakes Supermarket, as well as online channels.
Food Standards Australia New Zealand (FSANZ) warned that consuming food containing metal fragments may cause illness or physical injury. Consumers are advised not to eat the affected products and to return them to the place of purchase for a full refund.
The recall covers four varieties of Bomberry chocolate-covered blueberries and raspberries, all sold in 150g packages.
Affected date marking: All best-before dates up to and including 20 January 2028.
Consumers should check the product name, package size and best-before date before consuming these products.
The recall was initiated after the presence of metal was identified as a food safety concern. Unlike microbial hazards, which may cause illness through infection or toxin exposure, metal fragments can cause direct physical injury if accidentally swallowed.
Depending on their size, shape and location, swallowed metal pieces may damage the teeth, mouth, throat or digestive tract. The severity of injury depends on the characteristics of the foreign material and the circumstances of exposure.
The recall notice does not specify the source, size or quantity of the metal fragments, nor does it identify a particular manufacturing stage at which the contamination occurred.
Consumers who have purchased any of the affected Bomberry products should:
Retailers should identify the affected stock and follow the applicable recall procedures.
Foreign materials such as metal can enter food during processing, packaging, equipment operation or handling. Preventive measures, including equipment maintenance, effective inspection systems and appropriate foreign-body detection controls, are essential to reducing these risks.
The Bomberry recall highlights the importance of traceability and prompt corrective action when physical contaminants are identified in commercially distributed food. With the products sold through major supermarket chains and online channels nationwide, checking affected date markings is particularly important for consumers.
