Glass fragments pose a physical food safety hazard because they can cause injuries if swallowed. Depending on their size and shape, fragments may damage teeth, cut the mouth and throat, or perforate the intestine.
Unlike some forms of contamination, glass may not be reliably detected through routine visual inspection, particularly when fragments are small or mixed into food. Consumers should not attempt to sort through the beans to determine whether they are safe.
The recall highlights the importance of investigating consumer complaints and maintaining effective controls against physical contamination throughout food processing, packaging and distribution.
Although no illnesses or injuries had been reported when the recall was announced, the presence of sharp glass fragments can pose a serious risk. Prompt recalls and clear product identification are essential to preventing further exposure.
