Costco Wholesale has issued a recall of its popular bakery item, Mini Beignets Filled with Caramel, after discovering the product may contain an undeclared tree nut ingredient.
According to the retailer, some packages labeled as caramel-filled were accidentally filled with Chocolate Hazelnut, creating a serious health risk for consumers with tree nut allergies.
Hazelnut was not listed on the product label, which could lead to severe or life-threatening allergic reactions, including anaphylaxis, in sensitive individuals.
The recalled beignets were sold in Costco stores across 22 U.S. states, including:
Alabama, Arizona, California, Colorado, Florida, Georgia, Hawaii, Idaho, Illinois, Iowa, Louisiana, Michigan, Missouri, Nevada, New Jersey, New York, Ohio, Oregon, Pennsylvania, Tennessee, Virginia, and Washington.
The affected products were available for purchase between January 16, 2026, and January 30, 2026.
Costco is urging customers, especially those with tree nut allergies, not to consume the product.
Shoppers can return the item to any Costco warehouse for a full refund.
As of the latest update, no illnesses or allergic reactions have been reported in connection with the recall.
Tree nuts are among the nine major food allergens recognized in the United States, along with milk, eggs, wheat, soy, fish, shellfish, peanuts, and sesame. The U.S. FDA warns that reactions can range from mild symptoms such as hives to serious, potentially fatal respiratory complications.
This recall adds to a growing list of recent product safety incidents affecting major retailers, highlighting the continued importance of accurate labeling and allergen controls in food manufacturing and retail supply chains.
