A child rights organization directs Bournvita to remove misleading ads amid the high sugar content controversy.

The maker of the health drink Bournvita, Mondelez India International, has been asked in writing by the National Commission for the Protection of Child Rights (NCPCR) to review and remove misleading packaging labels and advertisements. The notice was issued amid a huge uproar over allegations that the milk supplement contained a high sugar content.

It is not uncommon for regulatory bodies to intervene in cases where there are concerns about the accuracy or truthfulness of advertisements for food products, particularly those targeted at children.

The Commission has been informed that the product contains a high percentage of sugar and ingredients that may have a negative impact on children’s health. The Organization for Children’s Rights also urged the Central Consumer Protection Authority and the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) to take legal action against businesses that violate advertising or food safety regulations.

This came after a health influencer criticized Bournvita, claiming the powder supplement contains high levels of sugar, cocoa solids, and a colorant that causes cancer.

Bournvita spokesperson said, a group of food scientists and nutritionists worked together to create the formulation, which offers the best in terms of both taste and health. All of the claims are transparent and each ingredient has received regulatory approval. For consumers to make educated decisions, all the necessary nutritional information is listed on the package.

The NCPCR requested a response from Bournvita within a week after observing that the company fails to display mandatory disclosures in line with the guidelines and regulations of FSSAI and under the Consumer Protection Act.
