Prime Food Processing LLC has voluntarily recalled 69 cases of its Dried Herring Fish product after regulators found that the fish had not been adequately eviscerated, potentially increasing the risk of contamination with Clostridium botulinum, the bacterium that causes botulism.

The recall was announced on June 2, 2026, and published by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) on June 4, 2026.

According to the company, the recalled product consists of Dried Herring Fish (Item #AF4110) packaged in a clear 7-ounce (198 g) plastic bag with blue trim. The affected lot bears Lot Code 26020 and an expiration date of June 12, 2028.

  • Expiration Date: June 12, 2028

Distribution

Arizona, California, Florida, Hawaii, Illinois, Kansas, Louisiana, Maryland, Missouri, North Carolina, New Hampshire, Nevada, New York, Oklahoma, Pennsylvania, Texas, and Utah.

Health Risk

The sale of uneviscerated fish is prohibited under New York State regulations because Clostridium botulinum spores are more likely to be concentrated in the fish’s internal organs. Consumption of contaminated fish may lead to botulism, a rare but potentially life-threatening illness.

Symptoms of botulism may include:

  • Dizziness
  • Blurred or double vision
  • Difficulty speaking or swallowing
  • Muscle weakness
  • Difficulty breathing
  • Abdominal distension
  • Constipation

Consumers experiencing these symptoms should seek immediate medical attention.

Investigation and Recall Action

The issue was identified during routine testing conducted by the New York State Department of Agriculture and Markets. An investigation determined that the problem originated from an imported product manufactured in Vietnam.

At the time of the recall announcement, no illnesses or adverse reactions had been reported in connection with the affected product.

Consumer Advice

Consumers who purchased the recalled Dried Herring Fish should not consume the product. They are advised to return the uneaten fish and its packaging to the place of purchase for a full refund.
