Alasko Frozen Raspberries Recalled in Canada For Norovirus

Frozen raspberries sold under the Alasko brand are being recalled in several Canadian provinces due to possible contamination with norovirus, a highly contagious virus that can cause acute gastroenteritis.

The recalled products were distributed in Manitoba, New Brunswick, Newfoundland and Labrador, Nova Scotia, Ontario, Prince Edward Island, and Quebec.

Health Risk

Norovirus can cause gastroenteritis, with symptoms typically developing 24 to 48 hours after exposure, although symptoms can appear as early as 12 hours.

The illness often begins suddenly. Common symptoms include diarrhea, vomiting, nausea, and stomach cramps. Some people may also experience a low-grade fever, headache, chills, muscle aches, and fatigue.

Most people recover within one to two days without long-term health effects. However, vomiting and diarrhea can cause dehydration, which may require medical treatment in severe cases.

What Consumers Should Do

Consumers should check their freezers for the recalled products and not consume, serve, sell, or distribute them.

Recalled raspberries should be discarded or returned to the place of purchase. Anyone who believes they became ill after consuming a recalled product should contact a healthcare provider.

People experiencing vomiting or diarrhea should drink plenty of fluids to help prevent dehydration.
