
Scanga Meat Company, based in Salida, CO, has initiated a recall of 563 pounds of ground beef products, as announced by the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) on December 23, 2023.
Recalled Products: The affected raw ground beef products, produced on December 11, are packaged in various forms, including 6-lb. plastic tubes labeled “It’s a treat to eat Scanga Meat OUR REGULAR GROUND BEEF” and “It’s a treat to eat Scanga Meat OUR X-L GROUND BEEF,” along with 1-lb. plastic chubs containing “SCANGA MEAT HAMBURGER” and 1-lb. plastic trays labeled “It’s a treat to eat Scanga Meat GROUND ROUND.” All the recalled items bear the establishment number “EST. 6460” inside the USDA mark of inspection.
Distribution: These products were sold at Scanga Meat Company’s retail location and distributed to restaurant locations within Colorado.Routine testing by FSIS revealed the presence of E. coli O103 in the ground beef products. Although there have been no confirmed reports of illness linked to the consumption of these products, consumers and restaurants are strongly advised not to consume or serve the recalled items.

Symptoms of E. coli Infections: Individuals who have consumed the implicated products and exhibit symptoms of E. coli infection, such as severe stomach cramps, bloody diarrhea, and fever, should seek medical attention. E. coli infections can vary in severity, with most patients recovering within five to seven days. However, 5 to 10 percent may develop a potentially life-threatening complication known as hemolytic uremic syndrome (HUS).
Hemolytic Uremic Syndrome (HUS): Symptoms of HUS include fever, abdominal pain, fatigue, decreased urination frequency, unexplained bruises or bleeding, and pallor. Those experiencing HUS symptoms should seek emergency medical care, as the condition can lead to serious complications such as hypertension, chronic kidney disease, brain damage, and neurologic issues.
