A kiwi shopper revealed that she saved money on groceries by purchasing them in Australia and then transporting them to New Zealand. Shopper saved up to 35% by ordering groceries from Australia compared to her local grocery in New Zealand.

She purchased 13 products including pasta, almonds, dried fruit, rolled oats, toothbrushes, shampoo, and hair colour. She then searched for the same things on her Countdown shopping app. She ordered through Amazon in Australia and received her items in five days. Her order cost her A$93.30 ($99.47). Because she only purchased things that were part of a free shipping deal, she was not charged for shipping. Shipping would have additional $15, according to the receipt.

A similar shopping cart in her local store would have cost her an additional $40, bringing her total to NZ$139.96. The best discount she found was on toothpaste, which she paid A$2.50 ($2.69) for.  But a few of customers were concerned about the environmental impact of flying their items in rather than buying locally, but as a food price in New Zealand skyrocketing, the practice demonstrated the desperate steps people were trying to cut costs.

Supermarkets around the country are reported to make around $1 million in extra revenues per day. Foodstuffs (New World, Pak’nSave, and Four Square) and Woolworths (Countdown, Super Value, and Fresh Choice) have effectively operated as a joint venture company in New Zealand, according to Commerce Commission head.

Food costs in New Zealand were 7.6% higher in March than the previous year. Fruit and vegetables were up 18%. Annual inflation reached 6.9%. Those who turning to Australia for cheap essentials were limited to non-perishable things such as pasta, flour, canned goods and sauces, and dry fruit. In order to save money, they needed to do some smart shopping and buy $60 worth of food enough to qualify for free delivery.
