Glass Contamination Scare Triggers New Zealand Recall of Leis Sorrel Leaves

May 25, 2026 New Zealand

Food safety authorities in New Zealand have issued a recall for Leis Sorrel Leaves after the product was found to potentially contain foreign matter in the form of glass fragments, raising concerns about possible injury risks to consumers.

The recall was announced on May 22, 2026, by Q-Liquid Limited, trading as Skazka Imports. The affected product is Leis brand Sorrel Leaves sold in 250 g glass jars with a best-before date of October 14, 2027, and batch code 2977. The product was imported from Germany.

According to the recall notice, the contamination risk is linked specifically to possible glass particles inside the product. Consumption of food contaminated with glass can cause serious physical injuries, including cuts to the mouth, throat, gums, digestive tract, or internal organs. In severe situations, swallowing glass fragments may lead to choking, bleeding, infection, or require emergency medical treatment.

The recalled product was sold through:

  • European Deli and Grocery Skazka
  • Online via the Skazka Deli website

No other Leis brand products are affected by this recall, and the product was not re-exported outside New Zealand.

Authorities have stated that there have been no reports of injuries linked to the recalled product so far. However, consumers are strongly advised not to consume the affected Sorrel Leaves and to carefully check the best-before date and batch code on the jar label.

Consumers who purchased the recalled product should:

  • Stop using the product immediately
  • Return it to the retailer for a full refund
  • Seek medical advice if they experience any health concerns after consumption

Food safety officials continue to remind consumers that foreign matter contamination poses a significant safety hazard even when the product appears normal and unopened.
