P.E.I. oysters: Recall due to possible salmonella, CFIA says

Certain oyster products sold under the Five Star Shellfish Inc. brand have been recalled in Canada due to possible Salmonella contamination, according to the Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA). Consumers are advised not to consume, sell, serve, use, or distribute the affected products.

The recall affects multiple varieties of oysters distributed in Nova Scotia, Ontario, and Quebec.

Recalled Products

The recall includes the following oyster products harvested on June 22, 2026, from Harvest Location: PEI 1Q:

  • Malpeque oysters – 100-count packages (multiple shipping dates and grades)
  • Malpeque oysters – 25-count packages (UPC: 8 97848 00001 5; Best Before: July 22, 2026)
  • Malpeque oysters – 2.5 lb packages (UPC: 8 97848 00018 3; Best Before: July 22, 2026)
  • Conway Pearls oysters – 100-count packages
  • Blackberry oysters – 100-count packages
  • Gooseberry oysters – 100-count packages

The affected products were processed on June 22, 2026, with shipping dates of June 22 or June 23, 2026, depending on the product.

Health Risk

The products are being recalled because they may be contaminated with Salmonella, a bacterium that can cause foodborne illness. Contaminated food may not appear or smell spoiled but can still cause illness.

Symptoms of Salmonella infection may include:

  • Fever
  • Headache
  • Nausea
  • Vomiting
  • Abdominal cramps
  • Diarrhea

While healthy individuals typically experience short-term illness, severe infections can occur in young children, pregnant women, older adults, and individuals with weakened immune systems. In some cases, long-term complications such as severe arthritis may develop.

Consumer Advice

Consumers should:

  • Check whether they have any of the recalled oyster products.
  • Do not consume, serve, sell, or distribute the affected products.
  • Dispose of the recalled oysters or return them to the place of purchase.
  • Contact a healthcare provider if they develop symptoms after consuming the recalled products.

The CFIA is monitoring the effectiveness of the recall and conducting a food safety investigation, which may result in additional recalls if necessary.
