Frutas y Hortalizas del Sur S.A. has voluntarily recalled GreenWise Organic IQF Frozen Blueberries (10 oz) due to potential contamination with Escherichia coli O145:H28 (E. coli O145), a Shiga toxin-producing strain of E. coli that can cause severe foodborne illness.
The recall was announced on 3 July 2026 and published by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) on 6 July 2026. The affected blueberries were distributed exclusively to Publix retail stores across eight U.S. states.
The recall was initiated after reports of consumers experiencing gastrointestinal illness linked to the consumption of the frozen blueberries. According to the company, the product may be contaminated with E. coli O145:H28, a type of Shiga toxin-producing E. coli (STEC).
STEC infections can cause severe stomach cramps, diarrhea (which may become bloody), and vomiting. While most healthy individuals recover within about a week, some cases can develop into hemolytic uremic syndrome (HUS), a serious complication that can lead to kidney failure. Young children, older adults, and people with weakened immune systems are at the highest risk of severe illness.
The recall applies only to the following product:
The company confirmed that no other lot codes or best-by dates are affected by this recall.
According to the recall notice, 12 confirmed cases of illness associated with E. coli O145:H28 have been reported. The illnesses occurred between 11 May 2026 and 5 June 2026.
Following the reports and investigation linking the frozen blueberries to the illnesses, Frutas y Hortalizas del Sur S.A. initiated the voluntary recall and is working closely with regulatory authorities to determine the source of the contamination.
The affected product was distributed to Publix retail stores in Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Kentucky, North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee, and Virginia. Consumers in these states are advised to check their freezers for the recalled product.
Consumers who have purchased the affected GreenWise Organic IQF Frozen Blueberries should not consume the product.
The company advises consumers to either discard the product or return it to the place of purchase for a full refund.
Retailers and distributors have also been instructed to immediately isolate the affected lot, stop further distribution, and notify downstream customers who may have received the product.
Frutas y Hortalizas del Sur S.A. stated that food safety remains its highest priority and that it is conducting a thorough investigation into the source of the potential contamination in collaboration with regulatory authorities. Additional updates will be provided as more information becomes available.
