On 30 August 2025, Speirs Foods (2018) Limited issued a recall for several batches of its ready-to-eat salads, including Speirs Foods brand salads and Woolworths brand Classic Coleslaw, due to the potential presence of foreign matter (metal fragments). The affected products were distributed nationwide across Woolworths, Fresh Choice, New World, and Pak’nSave supermarkets in New Zealand.

Affected Products

1. Woolworths brand Classic Coleslaw Salad (250g and 450g) with use-by dates 05/09/2025 and 06/09/2025
2. Speirs Foods brand Healthy Options Slaw, Bulk Coleslaw, Premium Coleslaw
3. Speirs Foods brand Vege Mango with Cashew Salad / Broccoli Cauli & Mango with Cashew Salad
4. Speirs Foods brand Broccoli Cranberry Pumpkin Seeds Salad
   (Various weights sold from deli counters between 27–29 August 2025)

Health Risks
The presence of metal fragments in food poses a physical hazard. Consumption could lead to:

• Cuts and lacerations in the mouth, throat, or digestive tract
• Choking risks, especially in children and elderly individuals
• Potential damage to teeth or dental work
• Internal injuries if fragments are swallowed

While no injuries have been reported to date, consumers are strongly advised not to eat the affected products. Even small fragments of metal can cause serious harm if ingested.

Consumer Guidance

• Do not consume the recalled salads.
• Return the products to the place of purchase for a full refund.
• If you have eaten the affected products and feel unwell or suspect injury, seek medical advice immediately.

Distribution Details

• Woolworths brand Classic Coleslaw was sold in Woolworths and Fresh Choice supermarkets nationwide.
• Speirs Foods ready-to-eat salads were sold across Woolworths, Fresh Choice, New World, and Pak’nSave outlets.
• The products were not exported and are limited to New Zealand retail distribution.

Retailer Notice
Retailers must display recall notices in their stores for one month to ensure consumer awareness.
