Friendly’s Ice Cream Recalled Over Allergen Risk from Packaging Error

Friendly's Brand Ice Cream Recalled After Packaging Error | Food Manufacturing
DFA Dairy Brands, LLC has recalled 324 cartons of Friendly’s 48 fl. oz. Cookies & Cream ice cream after discovering a serious packaging mix-up. The affected product was mistakenly packed in Vanilla Bean cartons but topped with Cookies & Cream lids. Since the Vanilla Bean flavor does not list soy or wheat on its label—ingredients present in Cookies & Cream—this poses a serious or potentially life-threatening risk to individuals with soy or wheat allergies.

Recall Details:

  • Product: Friendly’s 48 fl. oz. Cookies & Cream Ice Cream

  • Issue: Packaged in Vanilla Bean cartons with Cookies & Cream lids

  • Undeclared Allergens: Soy and wheat

  • Best By Date: November 26, 2025

  • Distribution: Sold in stores across Maryland, Virginia, and Pennsylvania

  • Quantity Recalled: 324 cartons

  • Reported Illnesses: None so far

Health Risk Information:
For individuals with allergies to soy or wheat, even small amounts can trigger severe reactions. Symptoms may include swelling of the lips, tongue, or throat, difficulty breathing, abdominal pain, nausea, hives, and in extreme cases, anaphylaxis—a medical emergency that can be fatal without prompt treatment. Those with known allergies who consumed the product should monitor for symptoms and seek medical care immediately.

This recall follows another ice cream-related safety alert last month, when Rich Ice Cream Co. withdrew over 110,000 cases of ice cream bars due to potential Listeria monocytogenes contamination—a bacterium that can cause invasive and sometimes fatal infections, especially in pregnant women, newborns, older adults, and the immunocompromised. Listeria infection is the third leading cause of death from foodborne illness in the U.S., responsible for around 260 deaths annually.

What Consumers Should Do:
Consumers are advised not to consume the recalled ice cream. They may return it to the place of purchase for a full refund or dispose of it safely to prevent accidental consumption.
