Shang Hao Jia, Inc., based in South El Monte, California, has issued a voluntary recall of 50 cases of its Danshi brand Spicy Shredded Tofu due to the presence of an undeclared allergen: sesame. This recall has been announced in coordination with the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) following findings during an inspection of the product’s foreign manufacturer.
The recall was triggered after FDA inspectors discovered that the product contained sesame but the packaging did not declare sesame as an ingredient. This oversight puts individuals with a sesame allergy at serious risk.
Sesame allergies can lead to a range of reactions, from mild symptoms like hives and swelling to severe, potentially life-threatening conditions such as anaphylaxis. The failure to disclose sesame on the label is a violation of U.S. food labeling regulations, especially since sesame became a major food allergen under U.S. law in 2023.
Consumers with allergies or severe sensitivity to sesame are strongly advised not to consume this product. Even small amounts of undeclared allergens can result in dangerous reactions.
As of the time of publication, no illnesses have been reported in connection with the product.
