October 12, 2026 USA

Oliva LLC Issues Allergy Alert on Undeclared Sesame in Baba Ghanouj, Spicy Baba Ghanouj, and Hummus | FDA

Oliva LLC, based in Bethlehem, Connecticut, is recalling approximately 250 units of Riad’s Oliva to Go Baba Ghanouj, Spicy Baba Ghanouj, and Hummus due to undeclared sesame, a major food allergen. The US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) published the company’s announcement on October 9, 2026.

The affected products were distributed to gourmet shops and farm markets in Litchfield County, Connecticut, and the Great Barrington area of Massachusetts. People with a sesame allergy or severe sensitivity could experience serious or potentially life-threatening allergic reactions if they consume the products.

Affected Products

The recall covers the following products sold in clear, square plastic containers with white-and-green labels:

  1. Riad’s Oliva to Go Baba Ghanouj, 14 oz. — Best-by dates from October 10 through October 14, 2026.
  2. Riad’s Oliva to Go Spicy Baba Ghanouj, 14 oz. — Best-by dates from October 10 through October 14, 2026.
  3. Riad’s Oliva to Go Hummus, 14 oz. — Best-by dates from October 12 through October 18, 2026.

The best-by dates are stamped on the side of the label.

Why Are the Products Being Recalled?

According to the company’s announcement, an inspection revealed that sesame was not declared in the ingredient declaration on the affected products. The company stated that it corrected the labeling discrepancy after discovering the issue.

Sesame can trigger allergic reactions in susceptible individuals. Symptoms may include hives, itching, swelling of the lips or throat, vomiting, difficulty breathing and, in severe cases, anaphylaxis, a potentially life-threatening reaction requiring immediate medical attention.

No illnesses had been reported in connection with the recall at the time of the announcement.

What Should Consumers Do?

Consumers who purchased the affected products are advised to:

  • Stop consuming the products if they have a sesame allergy or severe sensitivity.
  • Return the recalled products to the place of purchase for a full refund or replacement, as advised by the company.
  • Seek immediate medical attention if symptoms of a severe allergic reaction occur after consumption.

Consumers with questions can contact Oliva LLC at 203-266-5558, Monday through Friday, from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Eastern Time.

Food Safety Takeaway

This recall highlights the importance of accurate allergen declarations and effective label verification in food manufacturing. Even when a food product is not intended to contain a particular allergen, an omission from the ingredient declaration can expose allergic consumers to serious health risks.

Manufacturers must ensure that product labels accurately communicate allergen information, while consumers with food allergies should carefully check labels and stay informed about recalls.
