

El Chilar HF, LLC has expanded its recall of El Chilar “Canela Molida” Ground Cinnamon due to elevated levels of lead found in the product. The initial recall was issued on March 6, 2024, for Lots #D-300 EX1024 and #F272 EX1026, comprising 127 boxes (12 bags per box) of 1.25 oz bags of cinnamon. Further testing by the Maryland Department of Health has identified additional contaminated lots: #E-054 EX0225 and #D-181 EX0624.
The recall comes as part of a precautionary measure after discovering potentially contaminated raw materials from the supplier. Lead exposure poses significant health risks, particularly to children, potentially causing long-term damage to the central nervous system, learning disorders, and developmental defects. Adults exposed to lead may experience kidney dysfunction, hypertension, and neurocognitive effects. Excessive lead intake can result in severe health issues, including brain and kidney damage and interference with red blood cell production.
Product Distribution and Consumer Action:
The recalled cinnamon products were distributed by La Raza LLC, located at 8795 D’Arcy Rd, Forestville, MD 20747, and were available in retail stores throughout Maryland. Consumers who have purchased the recalled cinnamon are advised to discontinue use immediately and return the product to the point of purchase for a full refund.
Parents, guardians, and caregivers of children who may have been exposed to the product should consult with their healthcare provider for medical advice and appropriate care.
