What is aflatoxin?

Aflatoxins, naturally occurring toxins produced by molds, notably Aspergillus flavus and Aspergillus parasiticus, pose serious health risks to humans primarily through contaminated food consumption. These toxins are potent carcinogens, particularly linked to liver cancer, and can also suppress the immune system, leading to increased susceptibility to infections and diseases.

Harmful effect to health-:

Acute aflatoxicosis, characterized by symptoms such as vomiting and abdominal pain, can occur with high levels of exposure, while chronic ingestion of low levels of aflatoxins can result in long-term health effects like stunted growth and liver cirrhosis. Prevention strategies involving good agricultural practices, stringent food safety regulations, and public education are essential for minimizing aflatoxin contamination and protecting human health.

It’s important to note that this recall applies only to the Peanut Butter Dairy ice cream under the Woolworths brand. All other products containing peanut butter, including Woolworths’ range of spreads, are deemed safe for consumption.
