MDH Denies Allegations of Cancer-Causing Pesticide in Spice Products

April 29, 2024

In response to recent allegations of its spice products containing a cancer-causing pesticide, MDH, a popular Indian spice brand, has vehemently denied these claims as “baseless, untrue, and lacking any substantiating evidence.”

“Amid speculations doing rounds that there is presence of ETO in our products, we clarify and state unequivocally that these claims are untrue and lack any substantiating evidence,” a statement released by the company said.

The controversy arose after Hong Kong and Singapore banned the sale of MDH and Everest spice brands in their countries, citing the detection of the carcinogenic pesticide ethylene oxide in several spice mixes.

MDH issued a statement asserting that it has not received any communication from regulatory authorities of Singapore or Hong Kong regarding the alleged presence of ethylene oxide in its products. The company emphasized its commitment to safety and quality, stating that it does not use ethylene oxide at any stage of storing, processing, or packing its spices.

Furthermore, MDH reassured its customers about the authenticity and high quality of its products, emphasizing its tagline “Asli Masale Sach Sach, MDH MDH” (Real Spices Truly) and its dedication to providing genuine spices.

The Centre For Food Safety of the government of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region had stated that they detected the presence of ethylene oxide in several spice mixes of MDH and Everest brands, prompting the bans in both Hong Kong and Singapore.

The Indian government has sought details from the food safety regulators of Hong Kong and Singapore, indicating a desire to investigate the root cause of the ban and take necessary corrective actions.

Consumers who have consumed the implicated products and have concerns about their health are advised to seek medical advice, according to the Singapore Food Agency.

As the controversy unfolds, MDH remains firm in its denial of the allegations and its commitment to providing safe and authentic spices to its customers.
