Roasted Pistachios Recalled Over Salmonella Contamination Risk

October 31, 2025 Canada

Sweet and Smokey Roasted Pistachios

Health authorities have announced a recall of several varieties of roasted pistachios sold at Fresh Nuts, located at 12522-132 Avenue, Edmonton, Alberta, due to potential Salmonella contamination. The recall includes multiple flavored variants such as Barbeque, Salty, Lemon, and Saffron, sold in variable sizes between April 8 and October 29, 2025.

The recall was initiated after routine testing identified possible microbial contamination. As Salmonella can cause serious or even life-threatening infections, consumers are strongly advised not to consume the affected products.

Details of the Affected Products
All recalled products were sold under no brand name at the same retail outlet:

  • Roasted Pistachios Barbeque
  • Roasted Pistachios Salty
  • Roasted Pistachios Lemon
  • Roasted Pistachios Saffron
Each of these items lacks a UPC and was sold loose or in variable-weight packaging.

Why This Recall Matters
Salmonella is a pathogenic bacterium that poses a major risk to public health. Food contaminated with Salmonella often appears normal — it may not smell or look spoiled — but can still lead to severe illness.

  • High-risk groups such as young children, elderly individuals, pregnant women, and those with weakened immune systems are especially vulnerable.
  • In severe cases, infection can spread from the intestines to the bloodstream, potentially leading to sepsis or death if untreated.
  • Even healthy individuals can experience fever, headache, vomiting, nausea, abdominal cramps, and diarrhea.
  • Long-term complications, such as reactive arthritis, can persist long after the infection subsides.

What Consumers Should Do
Consumers are urged to:

  1. Check for recalled pistachios purchased from Fresh Nuts in Edmonton between April 8 and October 29, 2025.
  2. Avoid eating, serving, or selling the affected nuts.
  3. Dispose of or return the recalled products to the store where purchased.
  4. If symptoms develop after consuming the product, contact a healthcare provider immediately.

Public Health Note
Salmonella contamination in nuts is particularly concerning because nuts are often eaten without further cooking — meaning the bacteria are not killed before consumption. This emphasizes the importance of strict hygiene and sanitation controls in nut roasting and packaging facilities.
