Recall of specific batches of Horgans and M&S Food Truffle Gouda cheese |  Food Safety Authority of Ireland

Specific batches of Horgans Truffle Gouda and M&S Food Truffle Gouda have been recalled due to the presence of Listeria monocytogenes, according to a Category 1 (For Action) food safety alert. The affected cheese products originate from the Netherlands.

The recall was initiated by Horgans after the pathogen was detected in the implicated batches. Recall notices are being displayed at Tesco Ireland and Marks & Spencer stores where the products were sold.

Consumers are urged not to eat the affected cheese, as Listeria monocytogenes can cause serious illness, particularly in vulnerable groups.

Health risk

Listeria monocytogenes is a bacterium that can cause listeriosis, a foodborne illness. In healthy individuals, symptoms are generally mild and may include:

  • Fever and flu-like symptoms
  • Nausea
  • Vomiting
  • Diarrhoea

However, the infection can be severe or life-threatening in people at higher risk, including:

  • Pregnant women
  • Infants and newborns
  • Older adults
  • People with weakened immune systems

The incubation period for listeriosis averages three weeks, although symptoms may appear anywhere between 3 and 70 days after consuming contaminated food.

Actions for retailers

Retailers have been instructed to:

  • Remove the affected batches from sale immediately.
  • Display recall notices at points of sale to inform customers.

Consumer advice

Consumers who have purchased the affected batches of Horgans Truffle Gouda or M&S Food Truffle Gouda should not consume the products. They should return them to the retailer where they were purchased for an appropriate refund or dispose of them safely.

Only the batches with the listed best-before dates are affected by this recall. Consumers are encouraged to check product packaging carefully before consumption.
