Turkana Food Inc. has issued a voluntary recall of 352 cases of Floria Dried Apricots due to the presence of undeclared sulfites, a known allergen. The recall was prompted by a routine sampling conducted by the New York State Department of Agriculture, which identified sulfites in the product that were not declared on the packaging label.
The affected product was distributed in the following U.S. states: Florida (FL), Kentucky (KY), Virginia (VA), New York (NY), New Jersey (NJ), Tennessee (TN), Massachusetts (MA), Texas (TX), Illinois (IL), Indiana (IN), Michigan (MI), Rhode Island (RI), Pennsylvania (PA), North Carolina (NC), Maryland (MD), Ohio (OH), Alabama (AL), Missouri (MO), and California (CA).
Sulfites are commonly used as preservatives in dried fruit, but they must be clearly listed on product labels due to the potential for severe allergic reactions. Individuals who are sensitive to sulfites may experience serious symptoms including wheezing, hives, stomach pain, or anaphylactic shock in rare cases. Although no illnesses have been reported as of June 12, 2025, consumers with sulfite sensitivity should not consume this product.
Turkana Food Inc. has halted further production and distribution of the product as the company works closely with the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to investigate and resolve the labeling issue. Ensuring product safety and consumer health remains the company’s top priority.
