September 9, 2025 Canada

Baklava containing pistachios recalled over salmonella risk | CBC News
Health authorities have issued a recall of various Baklava-type products sold at Jnaid Sweets, 169 Wharncliffe Rd S, London, Ontario between May 15 and July 30, 2025. The recall was prompted after possible contamination with Salmonella was detected. This action is part of an ongoing foodborne illness outbreak investigation.

Affected Products

  1. Classic Baklava
  2. Turkish-style Baklava
  3. Pistachio Fingers
  4. Crowns King
(All sold as variable clerk-served products, with no UPC codes)

Reason for Recall
The products may be contaminated with Salmonella. Contaminated foods can appear normal in look, taste, and smell but still cause illness.

Health Risks
Salmonella infection, known as salmonellosis, poses a significant health concern.

  1. Common symptoms include fever, abdominal cramps, diarrhea, nausea, vomiting, and headache.
  2. Illness can last between 4 to 7 days, but severe cases may require hospitalization.
  3. Vulnerable groups—young children, pregnant women, older adults, and people with weakened immune systems—are at higher risk of developing severe or potentially fatal infections.
  4. Even after recovery, long-term complications such as reactive arthritis may occur.

What You Should Do

  • Do not consume, sell, or distribute the recalled products.
  • Safely discard the items or return them to the place of purchase.
  • If you have consumed these products and developed symptoms, seek medical attention immediately.

Public Advisory
Authorities are urging consumers to remain vigilant. This recall highlights the importance of food safety awareness, especially with high-risk ready-to-eat items like desserts that often involve nuts and syrups, which can harbor pathogens if handling and storage conditions are compromised.
