Back Country Foods Limited has recalled specific batches of its popular Back Country Cuisine Mushroom Bolognaise and Spaghetti Bolognaise meals after an undeclared egg allergen was discovered in the products.
The recall applies to Mushroom Bolognaise (90g and 175g) and Spaghetti Bolognaise (90g, 175g, and 440g) freeze-dried pouches with best-before dates between April 7, 2029, and September 29, 2029. The affected products were distributed nationwide across New Zealand through supermarkets, online stores, and specialty outdoor retailers, and were also exported to Australia, Chile, and South Africa.
Back Country Foods initiated the recall after discovering that egg, a major food allergen, had not been listed on the product label. This labeling error could have serious implications for individuals with egg allergies or intolerances.
Egg allergies are among the most common food allergies, particularly in children. Even small amounts of egg protein can cause adverse reactions such as skin rashes, swelling, vomiting, abdominal pain, or respiratory issues. In severe cases, exposure can lead to anaphylaxis, a potentially life-threatening condition requiring immediate medical attention. Individuals with known egg allergies should therefore avoid consuming these recalled meals entirely.
Consumers who are allergic or intolerant to egg should not eat these products and are urged to return them to the retailer for a full refund. Those who have already consumed the affected meals and experience symptoms are advised to seek medical care promptly. For consumers without egg allergies, the products pose no safety concern.
Other Back Country Cuisine products remain unaffected by this recall.
