Back Country Cuisine Recalls Bolognaise Meals Due to Undeclared Egg Allergen

October 21, 2025 New Zealand

Back Country Foods Limited has announced a recall of specific batches of its Back Country Cuisine brand Mushroom Bolognaise and Spaghetti Bolognaise after the discovery of an undeclared egg allergen in the products.

The recall affects Mushroom Bolognaise (90g and 175g) and Spaghetti Bolognaise (90g, 175g, and 440g) freeze-dried meal pouches with best-before dates ranging from April 7, 2029, to September 29, 2029. These products were distributed nationwide in New Zealand through online platforms, supermarkets, and specialty outdoor stores, and were also exported to Australia, Chile, and South Africa.

Reason for Recall

The recall was initiated after it was found that egg, a known allergen, was not declared on the product label. This poses a serious health risk to individuals with egg allergies or intolerances, as consuming the affected meals could trigger allergic reactions ranging from mild symptoms such as hives and digestive distress to severe reactions like anaphylaxis, which can be life-threatening if not treated promptly.

Consumer Advisory

Consumers with an egg allergy or intolerance are advised not to consume these products. Those who have eaten the affected meals and are concerned about their health should seek medical advice immediately. However, people who are not allergic or intolerant to egg can safely consume the products.

Customers can return the recalled items to the retailer for a full refund. No other Back Country Cuisine products are affected by this recall.
