Lidl Recalls Cashew Nuts Over Glass Contamination Risk

November 8, 2025

Supermarket chain Lidl GB has issued a nationwide recall of its Simply Roasted and Salted Cashew Nuts (125g packs) after confirming the potential presence of glass fragments in certain batches. The affected products carry a best-before date of 28 June 2026, and the recall was initiated as a precautionary measure to protect consumers from potential injury.

The retailer has advised customers not to consume the implicated cashews due to the risk of choking or internal injury if glass particles are ingested. Lidl has also placed point-of-sale notices in stores across Great Britain to alert shoppers and provide guidance on returning the product for a full refund, even without a receipt.

The recall applies exclusively to the 125g Simply Roasted and Salted Cashews, sold under Lidl’s private label. Other nuts or Simply Lidl products remain unaffected. Lidl stated that it is investigating how the contamination occurred but has not yet disclosed details of the source or process failure.

This is not the first time Lidl has faced contamination-related recalls. In May, the retailer withdrew four variants of its Alesto Raw Fruit & Nut Bars after reports of plastic foreign matter being found in the product. Similar food safety incidents have also emerged globally, such as Ben’s Original’s Ready Rice recall in the United States following the discovery of small stones in certain batches.

Health Risks of Glass Contamination
Ingesting glass fragments poses serious health risks, including:

  • Physical injury: Small or sharp glass pieces can cause cuts to the mouth, throat, or stomach lining.
  • Choking hazard: Larger fragments can obstruct the airway, leading to severe respiratory distress.
  • Internal damage: If swallowed, glass can lead to gastrointestinal bleeding or perforation, which may require urgent medical attention.

Unlike microbial contamination, which causes infection, foreign object contamination is an immediate physical hazard and can have life-threatening consequences, especially for children and elderly individuals.

Consumer Guidance
Consumers who have purchased the affected product should avoid eating it and return it to any Lidl GB store for a full refund. Lidl’s customer care team can be contacted at customer.care@lidl.co.uk or 0203 966 5566 for further assistance.

Broader Context
Incidents like this highlight the importance of robust quality control and product traceability in the food industry. Food safety authorities emphasize that all manufacturers must maintain strict monitoring at every stage of production — from sourcing and processing to packaging — to prevent contamination by foreign materials such as glass, metal, or plastic.
