Health Alert: Ground beef in HelloFresh meal kits has reportedly been related to a recent outbreak of E. Coli infections in the US

September 13, 2022

In the united states of America, the ground beef in HelloFresh meal kits has reportedly been related to a recent outbreak of E. Coli O157:H7 infections, according to federal officials. The Food Safety and Inspection Service of the USDA has determined that there is no need to issue a recall because the affected ground beef is reportedly no longer on the market. The organization has still released a public health notice due to its fear that some consumers may still have ground beef in their freezers.

Consumers received the meal kits with the ground beef that was the subject of the public health notice between July 2 and July 21. The 10-ounce plastic vacuum-packed canisters are either EST#46481 L1 22 155 or EST#46481 L5 22 155, and they are 85% lean. The packaging’s side has the codes. The USDA’s mark of inspection, EST.46841, is also printed inside the containers of ground beef.

According to the Food Safety and Inspection Service notice, traceback data showed that some case-patients consumed ground beef made at establishment M46841 and distributed by HelloFresh. “FSIS continues to work with suppliers and public health partners on the investigation while doing a traceback of the components used to create the ground beef.”

According to the public health notice, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention is collaborating on the outbreak investigation with FSIS and state health authorities. On September 11, however, the CDC still had not published any details about the outbreak.

About E. coli infection

Hemolytic uremic syndrome, a potentially fatal kidney failure consequence associated with E. coli infections, develops in about 5 to 10% of patients with E. coli infections (HUS). HUS symptoms include pallor, little unexplained bruises ness bleeding, fever, abdominal pain, extreme fatigue, and decreased frequency of urine. The Shiga toxin, which is produced by the O157:H7 E. coli strain, can injure the intestines and cause excruciating, bloody diarrhea.

Each person experiences E. coli infections differently, but common symptoms include severe stomach pains and frequent, bloody diarrhea. Additionally, some patients may be feverish. In five to seven days, the majority of patients are well again. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, other people may experience serious or life-threatening symptoms and complications (CDC).

Many HUS patients recover in a matter of weeks, but some pass away or sustain fatal damage. Although this disorder can affect persons of any age, it is most prevalent in children under the age of five due to their underdeveloped immune systems, older adults due to their immune systems degrading, and individuals with weakened immune systems, such as cancer patients.

People with HUS symptoms need to get emergency medical help right once. Because HUS can result in more serious and persistent issues such hypertension, chronic kidney disease, brain damage, and neurologic issues, patients with the illness are likely to be hospitalized.

The CDC advises using a meat thermometer to verify the temperature and advises against leaving raw meat out of the refrigerator for longer than two hours. Raw meat should be kept separate from other foods and refrigerated at 40 degrees or lower. Wash your hands with soap and water for at least 20 seconds after handling raw meat.
