German retail chain, Lidl has opted to implement a sustainable business plan through 2025, with a focus on reducing the number of animal-based products and expanding its selection of vegetable proteins. This decision is influenced by environmental concerns like climate protection and green transition.

During the Green Week agri-food trade event in Berlin, Christoph Graf, Lidl’s head buyer, spoke about this decision.  He apparently stated that there is ‘no alternative’ to reducing meat options in Lidl because there is ‘no second planet’. The ability to feed 10 billion people in the future necessitates careful management of food resources and a reduction in meat consumption.

Many people with take this decision positively while customers who enjoy meat and animal-based products will not give them up easily and will move to another shop that sells a sufficient amount of these products. Lidl will soon release a sustainability report which is intended to focus on key differences between plant and animal-based products.

The supermarket business is not attempting to dictate how customers live their lives. but this move is excellent and will provide more people with access to low-cost plant proteins. Younger consumers will be pleased with the decision, said Graf.
