Tom & Luke Snackaballs Recalled in NZ for Hard Plastic Contamination

December 4, 2025 New Zealand

Smartfoods Limited has issued a recall for several varieties of Tom & Luke Low Carb Snackaballs after reports that the products may contain foreign matter (hard plastic). The recall affects multiple flavours and date codes sold across New Zealand and exported to Australia.

A food safety alert has been issued for selected batches of Tom & Luke Low Carb Snackaballs due to the possible presence of hard plastic pieces. The products come in 112 g plastic pouches, and the recall includes the following varieties and date markings:

  • Cookies & Cream (112 g): Best Before 11 SEP 2026

  • Hazelnut (112 g): Best Before 03 SEP 2026 and 11 SEP 2026

  • Raspberry (112 g): Best Before 15 SEP 2026, 11 SEP 2026, and 16 OCT 2026

No other Tom & Luke products are affected.

The recalled snack balls were distributed to selected supermarkets and retail outlets across New Zealand, and some batches were exported to Australia.

Health Risk: Why Hard Plastic Contamination Is Serious

Hard plastic fragments in food pose a physical injury hazard. Even small pieces can cause:

  • Cuts or lacerations in the mouth

  • Damage to teeth

  • Choking risk, especially for children and elderly individuals

  • Internal injury if swallowed, including risk of perforation

Consumers who have already eaten the product and experience discomfort, bleeding, swallowing pain, or persistent throat irritation should seek medical attention promptly.

What Consumers Should Do

Customers should check their Snackaballs for the affected best-before dates.
Products from the recalled batches should not be consumed.

You may return the product to the retailer for a full refund. People concerned about their health after consuming the recalled product are advised to consult a healthcare provider.
