Shaikh Al Kar brand Tahini has been recalled from the marketplace due to possible contamination with Salmonella. The recall affects two product sizes—400 g and 800 g—sold in British Columbia. The Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) updated its recall warning to include additional product details identified during a food safety investigation.
Recalled Product Details
Reason for Recall
The affected tahini products may be contaminated with Salmonella, a harmful bacterium that can cause serious illness. Importantly, contaminated food may not look, smell, or taste spoiled, making the risk harder to detect for consumers.
Health Risks
Salmonella infection (salmonellosis) typically causes short-term symptoms, including fever, headache, nausea, vomiting, abdominal cramps, and diarrhea. Most healthy individuals recover without treatment, but vulnerable groups—including young children, pregnant women, the elderly, and those with weakened immune systems—may experience severe illness that could lead to hospitalization. In rare cases, long-term complications, such as severe arthritis, can occur after an infection.
