Nationwide Ice Cream Recall: Over 20 Products Pulled Due to Plastic Contamination Risk

May 22, 2025 USA

Vanilla Ice Cream

Wells Enterprises, also known as Wells Dairy, has issued a voluntary nationwide recall of 22 varieties of ice cream and frozen yogurt due to the potential presence of hard plastic fragments in the products. The recall affects over 100 distribution centers across the U.S., including restaurants, cafeterias, and food service operations.

Reason for Recall

According to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA), the recall has been classified as Class II, meaning consumption could result in temporary or medically reversible health consequences, such as choking, dental injury, or oral lacerations. The risk of serious harm is considered remote, but precautionary action is being taken to protect public health.

Affected Products

The products, sold in 3-gallon containers, include a wide range of flavors and brands—both private label and partner-distributed. All impacted items carry “Best If Used By” dates from March to October 2026.

Notable recalled items include:

Each recalled product is associated with the potential for plastic contamination originating from ingredients, equipment, or packaging components.

Expert Insight

Dr. Byron D. Chaves, food safety professor at the University of Nebraska–Lincoln, stated:

ā€œForeign material contamination like hard plastic can result from equipment parts or packaging failures during large-scale production. While these pieces may sometimes be visible to consumers, their presence in ready-to-eat products like ice cream poses a real physical hazard.ā€
