Pistachio products could carry salmonella risk. What we know so far - National | Globalnews.ca

Health authorities in Canada have expanded an ongoing recall involving pistachios and pistachio-containing products due to potential Salmonella contamination. The Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) has issued multiple recall warnings beginning November 12, 2025, covering several brands and unbranded bulk products sold across multiple provinces and through online platforms. Consumers are urged to check their pantries and immediately stop consuming the affected products.

Growing List of Affected Products

The recall includes a wide range of pistachio forms: salted, lemon salted, lightly salted, raw kernels, bulk pistachios, and pistachio products sold under both branded and non-branded labels. Many were sold in clerk-served formats, bulk bins, or small grocery stores across Ontario, while others were distributed across several provinces including Alberta, British Columbia, Manitoba, New Brunswick, Newfoundland and Labrador, Quebec, and via online retailers.

Examples of recently listed recalled products include:

  1. Salted Iranian Pistachios, Lemon Salted Iranian Pistachios, and Lightly Salted Iranian Pistachios sold clerk-served at Master Delight (Mississauga, ON)
  2. Raw Pistachio Kernels sold at Nutime, Thornhill, ON
  3. Various unlabelled pistachios sold in bulk at East Indian Supermarket (Oakville, ON) and Mirch Masala Groceries Inc. (Scarborough, ON)
  4. Phidelia Premium Products “Kernel Pistachio Natural” (200 g, LOT 4250)

The recall list continues to expand, with 70+ entries published as of November 19, 2025.

Why the Recall Matters

Salmonella contamination poses a significant public health risk because contaminated nuts can look, smell, and taste normal. Without visible signs of spoilage, consumers may unknowingly consume harmful bacteria.

Salmonella infection (salmonellosis) can cause:

  • Fever, headache, nausea, vomiting
  • Abdominal cramps and watery or sometimes bloody diarrhea
  • Dehydration due to fluid loss

High-risk groups — including infants, young children, older adults, pregnant women, and people with weakened immune systems — may experience more severe disease, which can require hospitalization.

Additional Health Risks Often Overlooked

  • Reactive arthritis: Some individuals may develop joint pain weeks after the infection has resolved.
  • Bacteremia: In rare cases, the bacteria can enter the bloodstream, leading to severe complications involving the heart, bones, or the nervous system.
  • Long-term gut issues: Persistent digestive issues can occur in vulnerable individuals.

What Consumers Should Do

  1. Check all pistachio products at home, especially clerk-served or bulk items without labels.
  2. If your product matches any recall description, discard it or return it to the place of purchase.
  3. Wash and sanitize any containers or surfaces that may have come into contact with the recalled nuts.
  4. If you have eaten a recalled product and develop symptoms, seek medical advice promptly.
