Canadian food safety authorities have issued a recall for multiple Coaticook brand White Cheddar cheese products due to possible contamination with Listeria monocytogenes, a harmful bacterium that can cause serious foodborne illness.

The recall affects 33 Coaticook cheese products distributed in Quebec, including various sizes and flavours of Mild White Cheddar Curds. Consumers are advised not to consume, use, sell, serve, or distribute any of the recalled products.

Products Included in the Recall

The recall covers a wide range of Coaticook White Cheddar Curds, including:

  • Mild White Cheddar Curds
  • Mild White Cheddar Curds (Double Cut)
  • Dill Flavoured White Cheddar Curds
  • Spices Flavoured White Cheddar Curds
  • Hickory Flavoured White Cheddar Curds

The affected products are sold in multiple package sizes, ranging from 50 g to multi-pack formats, with best-before dates of August 7, 2026, and refrigeration instructions stating “À réfrigérer après le 24JL26”. A total of 33 products are included in the recall.

Health Risk

The recall was initiated due to the possible presence of Listeria monocytogenes, a bacterium that can cause listeriosis, a potentially serious foodborne illness.

Food contaminated with Listeria may look and smell normal but can still make people sick.

Symptoms may include:

  • Fever
  • Nausea and vomiting
  • Muscle aches
  • Severe headache
  • Neck stiffness

People at greatest risk include:

  • Pregnant women
  • Older adults
  • Individuals with weakened immune systems

In pregnant women, listeriosis can lead to miscarriage, premature delivery, stillbirth, or serious infections in newborns. Severe cases may also be life-threatening.

Consumer Advice

Consumers who have purchased any of the recalled Coaticook White Cheddar cheese products should:

  • Do not consume the product.
  • Dispose of it safely or return it to the retailer where it was purchased.
  • Contact a healthcare provider if symptoms develop after consuming the recalled cheese.

The recall was issued as a precaution following concerns over possible Listeria monocytogenes contamination. Food safety authorities are continuing their investigation and monitoring the situation.

Consumers in Quebec are encouraged to check their refrigerators for the affected products and follow recall instructions to reduce the risk of foodborne illness.
