The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has announced recalls of two enoki mushroom products due to possible contamination with Listeria monocytogenes, a harmful bacteria that can cause serious illness.
The recalls involve enoki mushrooms sold under the IQ Produce and HH Fresh Trading brands after product samples tested positive for Listeria monocytogenes.
Consumers are advised to check for the following recalled mushroom products:
According to the FDA, the HH Fresh Trading mushrooms were distributed through local wholesalers in Florida and Texas.
Listeria monocytogenes can cause a serious infection known as listeriosis. Symptoms may include:
The infection can be especially dangerous for pregnant women, older adults, young children, and individuals with weakened immune systems.
In pregnant women, listeriosis may lead to miscarriage, stillbirth, premature delivery, or life-threatening infection in newborns.
Consumers who purchased the recalled enoki mushrooms are urged not to consume them. The products should either be discarded immediately or returned to the place of purchase for a refund.
Because Listeria can spread easily to surfaces and other foods, consumers are also advised to thoroughly clean refrigerators, countertops, utensils, and hands after handling the recalled mushrooms.
Anyone experiencing symptoms after consuming the products should seek medical attention promptly.
