The Ambriola Company has announced a nationwide recall of several cheese products sold under the Ambriola, Locatelli, Member’s Mark, Pinna, and Boar’s Head brands after routine testing detected Listeria monocytogenes. The recall spans multiple product sizes, brands, and expiration dates distributed between November 3 and November 20, 2025. Although no illnesses have been reported, the company has expanded the recall as a precaution and temporarily halted production at the affected facility in West Caldwell, New Jersey.

Recalled Products

The recall includes select grated Pecorino Romano products in retail cups, bags, and by-the-pound offerings. Examples of affected items include:

  1. Locatelli Pecorino Romano Grated – 4 oz. and 8 oz. cups
  2. Boar’s Head Grated Pecorino Romano – 6 oz. cup
  3. Member’s Mark Pecorino Romano – 1.5 lb. bag
  4. Ambriola, Locatelli, Pinna, and Boar’s Head Pecorino Romano sold by the pound

A wide range of expiration dates from February 2026 through May 2026 are included. Consumers are urged to verify the specific codes and dates listed in the recall announcement.

Why This Recall Is Serious

Listeria monocytogenes is a dangerous bacterium that can survive in refrigerated foods and cause listeriosis, a severe illness with potentially fatal consequences.

Health Risks and Symptoms

While some healthy individuals may experience only mild, flu-like symptoms such as fever, headache, nausea, abdominal pain, stiffness, or diarrhea, certain groups face far more dangerous outcomes:

  • Pregnant women: Listeria infection can lead to miscarriage, stillbirth, premature birth, or severe infection in newborns.
  • Elderly adults and immunocompromised individuals: Higher risk of invasive listeriosis, which may lead to bloodstream infections, sepsis, and meningitis.
  • Children and frail individuals: Greater likelihood of rapid illness progression.

Invasive listeriosis requires urgent medical intervention. Anyone who has consumed the recalled cheese and develops symptoms should contact a healthcare provider promptly.

What Consumers Should Do

Consumers who purchased any of the recalled products should not eat them. The cheese should be discarded or returned to the place of purchase for a full refund.
