The Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) has announced a food recall involving Al Kanater brand Tahini due to potential Salmonella contamination. The recalled product was sold in Alberta and may have been distributed more broadly through retail or online platforms.
The product in question is Al Kanater Tahini, sold in a 908-gram container with the UPC code 5 285000 871200. The affected lot is marked T40907, with a production date of September 7, 2024 and an expiry date of September 7, 2026.
This recall was initiated after routine testing revealed the possible presence of Salmonella, a harmful bacterium that can cause foodborne illness even if the product appears normal in smell and appearance. As of now, there have been no confirmed cases of illness associated with this product, but consumers are urged to exercise caution.
Health officials warn that Salmonella infection can lead to serious health problems, especially in young children, the elderly, pregnant women, and individuals with weakened immune systems. Symptoms typically develop within hours to a few days after consumption and can include fever, stomach cramps, diarrhea, nausea, vomiting, and headache. While most healthy individuals recover without the need for medical treatment, vulnerable individuals may face severe complications such as dehydration, bloodstream infections, and in rare cases, long-term joint issues like reactive arthritis.
Consumers are advised not to eat the product and to check their homes for the recalled lot. The product should be either returned to the place of purchase for a refund or safely discarded. If anyone has already consumed the tahini and is feeling unwell, they should seek medical advice promptly.
The CFIA is continuing its investigation and further recalls may follow if additional affected products are identified. Updates will be provided on the Government of Canada’s food recall warnings page.
