A dead frog found inside a packet of potato wafers in Gujarat’s Jamnagar

The state food authority in Jamnagar,India have initiated a formal inquiry following a disturbing report of a dead frog found in a packet of potato chips. This incident has raised significant concerns about food safety standards, coming on the heels of a recent case in Mumbai where a resident discovered a human finger in ice cream purchased online.

Jasmin Patel, a resident of Pushkar Dham society, reported the incident to the Jamnagar Municipal Corporation. According to Patel, his four-year-old niece purchased a packet of Crunchex potato chips, manufactured by Balaji Wafers, from a nearby shop on Tuesday evening. Both his niece and his nine-month-old daughter consumed some of the chips before the niece discovered a decomposed frog inside the packet.

Patel described the sequence of events: “My niece threw the packet away after spotting the frog. At first, I did not believe her story, but when I checked the packet myself, I was shocked to see the decomposed frog. I immediately contacted the distributor and the customer care service of Balaji Wafers, but their responses were not satisfactory. Consequently, I reported the matter to the food safety officer the next morning.”

In response to the complaint, food safety officer D. B. Parmar and his team visited the shop where the packet was purchased. Their preliminary investigation confirmed the presence of the decomposed frog. “As directed by the municipal commissioner, we will collect samples from the production batch of these wafer packets for a detailed inquiry,” Parmar informed the media.

The discovery of the dead frog has prompted swift action from the local authorities. Samples from the same production batch will be examined to determine how the contamination occurred and to prevent such incidents in the future. This incident has also put a spotlight on Balaji Wafers, a well-known manufacturer, raising questions about their quality control and hygiene practices.

The food safety officer assured the public that stringent measures would be taken to ensure consumer safety. “We take such matters very seriously and will conduct a thorough investigation. Appropriate action will be taken based on the findings to prevent any recurrence,” Parmar added.

This alarming discovery follows a recent report from Mumbai where a piece of a human finger was found in ice cream ordered online. These back-to-back incidents have heightened public anxiety regarding food safety and the effectiveness of regulatory mechanisms in place to protect consumers.

Balaji Wafers, in a brief statement, expressed their concern over the incident and assured full cooperation with the investigation. They emphasized their commitment to maintaining high standards of quality and hygiene in their manufacturing processes.

As the investigation proceeds, residents and consumers are urged to remain vigilant and report any similar incidents to the authorities to ensure swift action and uphold food safety standards.
