Food Fraud: Investigation into UK supermarket chain for misleading Consumers.

March 10, 2023

Food fraud happens when a food supplier purposefully misleads a customer about the nature and composition of the foods they are buying.

Recently food fraud incidence happened where pre packed sliced beef was labelled as British but it was originated from South America and Europe. Investigation is going on by National Food Crime Unit. A UK supermarket was forced to remove items from its shelves and the unit has refused to identify the retailer or meat supplier.

All impacted products were removed from the shelves. The BBC contacted UK supermarkets; Tesco, Sainsbury’s, Asda, Aldi, Lidl, the Co-op, Waitrose, Morrisons, Iceland, and Marks & Spencer all stated that they were not the retailer who received the beef.

The NFCU’s current plan has the possibility of damaging UK exports simply because of its lack of transparency and industry engagement.
