The World Health Organization recommends that free sugars account for no more than 10% of total energy consumption. This is approximately 51g, or 13 teaspoons, for an adult consuming 8700 kJ daily on average. The majority of sugar comes from energy-dense, nutrient-deficient discretionary foods, and drinks.
