Abbey Specialty Foods, based in Fairfield, NJ, has announced a recall of two of its cheese products due to potential contamination with Listeria monocytogenes. The affected products include:
These products were distributed in limited quantities to select retailers in Massachusetts (MA), Maine (ME), New Hampshire (NH), Ohio (OH), and Colorado (CO).
The recall was initiated after the supplier, Wicklow Farmhouse Cheese LTD., notified Abbey Specialty Foods of a possible contamination with Listeria monocytogenes. This bacterium can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections, particularly in vulnerable groups such as young children, elderly individuals, and those with weakened immune systems. Pregnant women are especially at risk, as Listeria infections can lead to miscarriages or stillbirths.
Healthy individuals infected with Listeria monocytogenes may experience short-term symptoms such as: High fever, Severe headache, Stiffness, Nausea, Abdominal pain, Diarrhea
Consumers are urged not to consume the recalled products. Instead, they should return them to the place of purchase for a full refund or dispose of them immediately.
To date, no illnesses or adverse health effects have been reported in connection with these products.
